Error description

  • Error Message: When running Java application on zEC12 server
with zEDC hardware compression it produces different results
when java.util.zip.Deflater.setLevel(0) is set compared to
software compression. The API setlevel(0) means NO COMPRESSION.
With zEDC hardware compression the data is compressesd, while
it is not compressed with software compression.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • The problem is caused because zEDC Express hardware compression
does not consider compression level zero and it compresses the
    data.

Problem conclusion

  • This APAR will be fixed in the following Java Releases:
       7 R1 SR1 (7.1.1.0)
       7 SR7 (7.0.7.0)
    .
The zEDC code in the z/OS JDK has been updated to fallback to
software compression when compression level is set to ZERO. This
ensures that the data is not compressed when compression level
    is set to ZERO.
