IV39384: NPIV PATHS DO NOT RECOVER AFTER SAN OUTAGE APPLIES TO AIX 6100-07

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • After a SAN problem that results in a reset of
the vfc client adapter timing out there is the
possibility that the vfc adapter is unable to
log back into the VIOS.

Local fix

  • Either rmdev and run cfgmgr for the affected virtual
HBA or reboot the LPAR.

* Systems running the 6100-07 Technology Level with
* devices.vdevice.IBM.vfc-client.rte at 6.1.7.0 through
* 6.1.7.18 level.

* PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
* In case of intermittent SAN connectivity outage, NPIV client
* adapter goes into NPIV_LOGGING state and does not retry
* previously failed logins, if the adapter is in opened state.

* RECOMMENDATION:
* Install APAR IV39384.
* Prior to fix availability, an interim fix is available from
* ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/aix/ifixes/iv39384/

Problem conclusion

  • Added checks in the vfc-client adapter code to validate
command-responses from the VIOS before processing it.
