APAR status

Error description

  • When sending RFH2 messages from WebSphere MQ v7.0 to v6.0
queue managers the data may become corrupt if any of the
NameValueLength fields, that describe the length of the RFH2
folders is not a multiple of 4.

Local fix

  • WebSphere MQ V7.1 and V7.5 do not exhibit this problem.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    USERS AFFECTED:
Users who send RFH2 messages from a WebSphere MQ v7.0 queue
manager to a v6.0 queue manager containing one or more folders
with a length which is not a multiple of 4 bytes.

    Platforms affected:
All Distributed (iSeries, all Unix and Windows)
    ****************************************************************
    PROBLEM SUMMARY:
When a WebSphere MQ 7.0 or later queue manager sends MQRFH2
messages over a channel to an older queue manager, it ensures
that the overall length of the MQRFH2 structure as well as the
length of each NameValueData field in the structure is padded
with spaces out to the nearest 4-byte boundary. However, in
some cases a V7.0.1 queue manager can add padding to an MQRFH2
structure which was already at a 4-byte boundary, for example
increasing its size from 512 to 514 bytes. In addition to
adding unnecessary padding, the queue manager may overwrite
less than four of the initial bytes of the message payload with
padding. This problem affects only certain messages.

Problem conclusion

  • The code was changed so that the operation to pad the folders
to a multiple of 4 bytes will not overwrite any following
    bytes with spaces.
