Error description

  • When using the SNMP MIB Browser, and typing in a hostname in the
    "Host" box, the name resolution is done by the Operating System,
    not by ITNM.

    For example, my seed file has an entry:
    HOSTNAME        Address
    ciscoDeviceA    1.2.3.4

    The host operating system for ITNM the name for 1.2.3.4 resolves
    only to the FQDN of "ciscoDeviceA.lab.ibm.com", not the short
    name.

    When using the mib browser, if I type in "ciscoDeviceA", it
    cannot resolve the name, despite it being stored this way in
    ITNM. It will only work if "ciscoDeviceA.lab.ibm.com" or
    "1.2.3.4" is used.

Local fix

  • Use the name as it's resolved by the OpSys on the host of ITNM.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * ITNM configuration for discovery has been configured to use *
    * a file finder, with a hostname that does *
    * not match the hostname in DNS. For example: *
    * 1xx.xx.xxx.x   fred    <-- Actual hostname                   *
    * ncxxx.xxxx.xxx.xxx                                           *
    *                                                              *
    * If the user enters "fred" in the MIB Browser Host field the *
    * MIB browser will not return the data from *
    * 1xx.xx.xxx.x. It will attempt to resolve "fred" via the ITNM *
    * servers DNS lookup.                                          *

Problem conclusion

  • code has been fixed to allow the MIB browser to first look up
    the name in the
    NCIM database, comparing the entityName to the passed in name.
    If the name is found in NCIM, then
    the accessIPAddress of that entity will be used by the MIB
    Browser to retrieve the data.
