Error description

  • When SEA failover is setup over 10Gb CT3 ethernet adapter
    (10 Gigabit Ethernet-SR PCI-Express Host Bus Adapter
(2514300014108c03)), a graceful shutdown of the VIOS
    could take a long time.

With certain switch configurations, such as Cisco Nexus
switch, the switch port could get disabled due to
    "pause rate limit err disable".
This indicates that the switch received a lot of
"pause frames" in a short time duration. The switch stats
will indicate very high number under
    Rx pause counters.

Local fix

  • Problem is unique to the 10Gb CT3 adapter with SEA
    failover.
So a setup that does not use the 10Gb CT3 adapter under
    SEA
failover will work fine. (so use a different type of
    ethernet adapter)

Problem conclusion

  • Proper initialization of hardware is done at adapter
    enable/disable ioctls.
