IV03670: INSTALLER NEEDS TO CHECK THAT THE USER INSTALLING ITNM HAD ACCESS TO THE DIRECTORY ABOVE NETCOOL

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • The user is installing ITNM 3.9 into a directory called netcool
    and doesn't have access to the directory above.
    
    You are installing ITNM 3.9 as a not root user to the path:
    /ITNM_3.9/NoAccess/Netcool
    
    The installed has has built in logic to not create a directory
    called netcool under an existing Netcool directory.  The
    installer will try and create the TIPV2 in on the same level as
    the Netcool directory which the user installing ITNM 3.9 doesn't
    have access to.  This will cause the installer to fail and
    report a "Catastrophic failure encountered when creating
    installation plan."
    

Local fix

  • To work around this issue you can request the
    administrator give you access to install in the directory
    above netcool, which is called NoAccess in this example.
    If that is not possible because of IT restrictions you
    can  change the name of the path to  something other then
    netcool or create a sub directory.
    
     /ITNM_3.9/NoAccess/Netcool/NCHOME
    or
    /ITNM_3.9/NoAccess/Something_Else

    * The installer checks whether the user has write access to    *

    * does not check whether the user has write access to the      *
    * upper level directory (e.g. /usr/IBM/tivoli) where the tipv2 *
    * and tipv2Components directories will be created.  This can   *
    * cause catastrophic failure for non-root installs.            *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * Most likely the user will have to make this determination    *
    * himself if he is installing the base code for ITNM 3.8.  The *
    * installer will be changed from ITNM 3.8 Fix Pack 0007        *
    * onward.                                                      *

Problem conclusion

  • The pre-req checking in the installer has been updated to
    include checking that the user has write access to the parent
    directory of the target install directory.  This fix is first
    available in
    fix pack | 3.8.0-ITNMIP-FP0007
