Error description
A GENERATE BACKUPSET or EXPORT NODE, or any other tape process may fail with one of the following types of warning message: ANR3525W GENERATE BACKUPSET: Transaction failed - storage media inaccessible. or ANR0670W EXPORT NODE: Transaction failed - storage media inaccessible. That happens if a tape drive needs too much time dismounting a tape volume, while that same tape drive is needed to mount another tape volume. Internally there are some mount retries done, but after a while the mount retries stop and the process fails with one of the above message types. A server trace with flags PVR MMS AS shows the following series of events: A PVR I/O agent is created internally to open a volume, here it is agent id 446: [463][pvr.c][2074][pvrOpen]:Created PVR I/O agent (446) for volume VOLXXXX [446][pvr.c][13928][AgentThread]:PVR I/O agent (446) waiting for next request. [446][pvr.c][13972][AgentThread]:PVR I/O agent (446) processing OPEN request. ... Later that agent finishes with rc=2825: [446][pvr.c][14408][AgentThread]:PVR I/O agent (446) finished OPEN request; rc=2825. [446][pvr.c][13928][AgentThread]:PVR I/O agent (446) waiting for next request. [446][pvr.c][13944][AgentThread]:PVR I/O agent (446) terminating. And the trace shows a retry to open the same volume VOLXXX again: [463][asvolmnt.c][3790][AsRetryMP]:Mount point retry 1 due to drive busy. The same agent 446 is created again to mount the same volume: [463][pvr.c][2074][pvrOpen]:Created PVR I/O agent (446) for volume VOLXXXX [446][pvr.c][13928][AgentThread]:PVR I/O agent (446) waiting for next request. [446][pvr.c][13972][AgentThread]:PVR I/O agent (446) processing OPEN request. But it fails again with same rc 2825: [446][pvr.c][14408][AgentThread]:PVR I/O agent (446) finished OPEN request; rc=2825. That mount retry appears multiple times until the internal mount fails after 30 seconds with the above warning message. Within that 30 seconds timeout period the retry happens multiple hundred times (seen up to 600+ times). In a library sharing environment the following additional message appears at the Library Manager side: ANR9790W Request to mount volume XXX for library client YYY failed. Any message showing storage media inaccessible reason might be caused by this. Here is an exhaustive list: ANR0525W ANR0542W ANR0670W ANR1021W ANR1096E ANR1144W ANR1216E ANR1242E ANR2321W ANR3525W ANR4471I IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected: All IBM Spectrum Protect Server at 8.1.x on all supported platforms Additional Keywords: TS013376018 DRIVEACQUIRERETRY MPTIMEOUT GRC_RETRY_ACQUIREMP
