Error description
The creation of the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus appliance system log bundle can produce a corrupted/unusable package. No error is seen when generating the log bundle via the GUI. The following error is seen after several minutes when generating the bundle via command line : sudo /opt/ECX/tools/logcollect/logcollect =============================================================== SPP Log Collection Tool =============================================================== Enter SPP credentials Username: <GUI user> Password: <pwd> Collecting logs --------------- Obtaining session ID ............................... success Downloading logs ................................... failure --------------------------------------------------------------- Error --------------------------------------------------------------- ('Connection broken: IncompleteRead(20 bytes read)', IncompleteRead(20 bytes read)) Traceback (most recent call last): ... ChunkedEncodingError: ('Connection broken: IncompleteRead(20 bytes read)', IncompleteRead(20 bytes read)) This can happen when the amount of data to collect is so big that it causes the process to time out when the internal data transfer takes too much time. The symptom is similar to APAR IT44259 but the fix for it needs improvement. |MDVPARTL 10.1.15.1 5737SPLUS| IT44259 IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Versions Affected: IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.x Additional Keywords: SPP, SPPLUS, TS013994819, logs, failed, data collection, IT44259

Problem conclusion
In IBM Spectrum Protect Plus before 10.1.15.3, system logs were downloaded on the command line using a servlet stream, which could break when the download took longer than the configured timeout for the servlet/HTTP connection. This timeout would occur when a large system log collection was collected, resulting in "broken pipe" errors in the logs and a failed or corrupted system log download. In IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.15.3, a new set of command line commands ("spp log collection [operation]") have been introduced that allow users to download the system logs directly to the file system. This removed the servlet connection from the log collection process, resulting in successful system log collections, regardless of the download size (assuming the file system has enough space to download the full system log collection).
