IT43630: VERSION 8.1.X API FUNCTION DSMUPDATEFS() PERFORMANCE IS DEGRADEDCOMPARED TO PREVIOUS API VERSIONS

Error description

• The dsmUpdateFS() function in IBM Spectrum Protect
  Backup-Archive API version 8.1.x runs longer than it did in
  previous API versions. Although the increased run time might
  vary from one system to another, the observed increase is
  approximately 300%.
  
  dsmUpdateFS() normally runs very fast, with sub-second run time.
  However, if the function is called many times over a short time
  interval, and the other API and application function calls have
  very small run times, then cumulative run times for all calls
  to dsmUpdateFS() are noticeable. The performance issue is
  further exacerbated when there is a large number of file spaces
  associated with the node. That is, run-time per call to
  dsmUpdateFS() scales in rough proportion to the number of file
  spaces that belong to the node.
  
  This problem was observed in the IBM Content Collector for SAP,
  which archives objects to the IBM Spectrum Protect Server. After
  the API was upgraded from version 6.4 to version 8.1, archive
  job run time increased by approximately 300%. Instrumentation
  data shows much more time is spent in the "API Misc" category.

Problem conclusion

• This problem was observed in the IBM Content Collector for SAP,
  which archives objects to the IBM Spectrum Protect Server. After
  the API was upgraded from version 6.4 to version 8.1, archive
  job run time increased. In general the problem can be seen by
  any software that calls the DSMUPDATEFS() API function.
  In newer IBM Content Collector for SAP levels the DSMUPDATEFS()
  API function  is called less frequently and so the concrete
  issue is bypassed.
