Error description

  • During the reclamation of offsite copy storage pool volumes
    containing data copied via a copy storage rule, a memory leak
    can occur if one or more bitfiles cannot be successfully
    retrieved from the container storage pool. Over a period of
    time, the memory leak can result in a server abend or cause the
    host machine to become unresponsive.

    Customer/Support Diagnostics:
    If affected by this problem, the output from the SHOW ALLOC
    command will show continued memory allocations by the
    bfGetSubBitFilesForAggregate() and/or sdTransferBitFile()
    functions, similar to the output below:

    bfutil.c line  2485:    31826 entries for     456993344 bytes
    (bfGetSubBitFilesForAggregate) thread 2110()
    sdrtrv.c line  1850:    27548 entries for    2429537440 bytes
    (sdTransferBitFile) thread 2110()

    As more offsite reclamation operations are performed, the number
    of memory allocations and the amount of allocated memory, will
    continue to increase for one or both of these functions.

    IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected:
    IBM Spectrum Protect Server 8.1.11.000 and higher on all
    supported platforms

Local fix

  • Bring the reclamation-eligible copy storage pool volumes onsite
    and perform MOVE DATA operations against these volumes to
    reclaim unused space.

    - or -

    Periodically restart the Spectrum Protect server instance to
    release any memory allocated by the functions listed above.
