Error description

  • If the option "SNAPSHOTPROVIDERFS VSS" is used in the dsm.opt,
    then the backup of a OneDrive file which is marked as 'On
    Demand' will fail with the following error message:
    
     ANS4004E Error processing 'x:\path\filename': destination file
    or directory is write locked
    
    An 'On Demand' file is stored in the cloud, and is automatically
    retrieved by OneDrive when being accessed.
    
    The issue is being seen because during the backup with VSS
    active, the file is retrieved to the VSS snapshot and not to
    it's original location, but a volume shadow copy is read only
    and the OneDrive file cannot be retrieved here.

  •  Use client option "SNAPSHOTPROVIDERFS NONE" .

Problem conclusion

  • If SNAPSHOTPROVIDERFS VSS (by default since 8.1.8.0) is used,
    the backup of OneDrive file marked as 'On Demand' will fail with
    the error message ANS4004E. The reason is that a volume shadow
    copy is read only.
    This behavior works as designed.
