APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When having automatic client failover enabled, the IBM Spectrum
    Protect Backup-Archive Client tries to edit and save the
    dsm.opt file without checking the free space condition on the
    disk.
    If no space is being left on the device, the IBM Spectrum
    Protect Backup-Archive Client cannot save changes in dsm.opt,
    leading finally to an empty dsm.opt file.
    
    
    The Backup-Archive
    Client detects the no space left condition as seen
    here:
    
    ANS0361I DIAG: WriteCtrlRec(): fwrite: errno 28: "No
    space left on device"
    
    but does not prevent dsm.opt from
    editing with the automatic replication information.
    
    Due to the
    empty dsm.opt file and the missing connection information, the
    Backup-Archive Client cannot connect to the Spectrum Protect
    Server anymore (ANS1017E) and the dsm.opt will need to be
    recreated.
    

Local fix

  • Ensure the location being used to store the opt file has
    sufficient free disk space and is not full or likely to be
    filled.

Problem conclusion

  • Now before adding info about primary or secondary servers we
    create a temporary file of dsm.opt/dsm.sys. If this info was
    added without issues then we delete this temporary file. In the
    case of failure we delete dsm.opt/dsm.sys corrupted and rename
    correctly the temporary file.
