Error description

  • When IBM Spectrum Protect Plus cannot find Microsoft SQL
instances on hosts part of an Always-on Availability Group
(AAG), the job log will report the backup of the database log
files as skipped for databases active on the affected peer
    hosts.

Having the following example of a 2-node Microsoft SQL servers
    cluster :
    <SQLInstance_1> on host name <HostName_1>
    <SQLInstance_2> on host name <HostName_2>
and a database <DB_Name> with the active copy on node
<SQLInstance_2> and part of AAG <AAG_1>.

If for any reason, IBM Spectrum Protect Plus cannot resolve the
Microsoft SQL Instance that owns the database, the following
will be seen in the backup job log :

    SUMMARY,<timestamp>CTGGA2398,Starting job for policy
                                 sql_<SLAName> (ID:<SLA_ID>). id ->

If a previous log backup was successful when the database was
active on another SQL node that could be resolved, the
subsequent log backups will be successful even if CTGGA2655 is
    still seen.
This is because the message CTGGA2655 only means IBM Spectrum
Protect Plus could not get the log backup status from one of
the SQL cluster nodes because of the resolving problem.

IBM Spectrum Protect Plus Versions Affected:
    IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.x

    Initial Impact: Medium

Local fix

  • Register the affected Microsoft SQL hosts with an IP address
resolvable by the IBM Spectrum Protect Plus host.

Problem conclusion

  • The intermittent enable log backup failure has been fixed by
reporting all peer node addresses during inventory.
