Error description

  • After upgrading IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments -
Data Protection for VMware to version 8.1.8.0 or later
versions, too many data mover nodes are listed for a VMware
data center in the IBM Spectrum Protect vSphere Client plug-in
for the VMware vSphere Web Client.

    =======================
    Diagnosing the issue:

On the Spectrum Protect Server the erroneously listed node
names were configured as proxy nodes for a node which contains
the data center node name as a subset of its name.

For example, if a node DC_NODE1 was configured for the VMware
data center DC01 and the following proxy relations exist on the
    Spectrum Protect Server:

    Protect> q proxy
    DC_NODE1 DM_NODE1 DM_NODE2
    OTHER_DC_NODE13 NODE3 NODE4

.... then the plug-in will list the following data mover nodes
    for the data center DC01:
      DM_NODE1
      DM_NODE2
      NODE3
      NODE4
    .... instead of only:
     DM_NODE1
     DM_NODE2

Taking the example above the following query is logged in the
Data Protection GUI host messages.log file in the
    C:\IBM\SpectrumProtect\webserver\usr\servers\veProfile\logs
    directory on Windows or the
    /opt/tivoli/tsm/tdpvmware/common/webserver/usr/servers/veProfile
    /logs
    directory on Linux:

    [DATE TIME] 000000a9 SystemOut
O ADMIN CMD START <TSMA2>: SELECT
     NODE_NAME,TCP_ADDRESS,CLIENT_OS_NAME FROM NODES WHERE
     PROXY_TARGET LIKE '%DC_NODE1%'
    ...........
    [DATE TIME] 000000a9 SystemOut
    O
    * Existing datamovers for datacenter node: DC_NODE1
            DM_NODE1
            DM_NODE1
            NODE3
            NODE4

This select query surrounds the data center node name with wild
    cards.

    =======================
    Affected product versions:
IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments
    - Data Protection for VMware version 8.1.8.0 or later versions
    on Windows and Linux

Local fix

  • Avoid the data center node name being a substring of another
    proxy target node name.
