Error description
On Windows, incremental file backup of a CIFS share will stop with the message: "ANS4042E <filename> contains one or more unrecognized characters and is not valid." if the affected file on remote share begins with a special character ASCII represented less than 2E (.) like SP (space / blank character), !, ", #, $, % A full incremental backup works fine. For example, if we have the following directory structure (Where G:\ is a mapped network drive): Directory of G:\Dir2 18.07.2018 16:51 11 #179A Testfiles 18.07.2018 16:58 <DIR> . 18.07.2018 17:17 <DIR> .. 1 File(s) 11 bytes We can see the first file starts with the symbol '#' or ASCII 23 which is less than the symbol '.' or ASCII 2E. An incremental backup with the command : dsmc incr G:\Dir2 -subdir=yes will result in : ANS4042E Object name '\\server1\g\Dir2\.' contains one or more unrecognized characters and is not valid. A client 'service' trace will show something similar to: <timestamp> [PID] [TID] : ..\..\common\fio\ntfileio.cpp(5300): fioScanDirEntry(): Object: '.' <timestamp> [PID] [TID] : ..\..\common\fio\ntfileio.cpp(9735): GetFileSecurityInfo(): Get security descriptors in new format for '\\server1\g\Dir2\.' <timestamp> [PID] [TID] : ..\..\common\winnt\ntrc.cpp( 745): TransWin32RC(): Translated Win32 RC 161 (0x000000a1) from CreateFile to TSM RC 935 On the other hand, performing an incremental full backup of the volume will succeed : dsmc incr G: -subdir=yes IBM Spectrum Protect Client affected: IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive client versions 7.1.x and 8.1.x are affected on Windows platform. Problem conclusion
