Problem conclusion

  • Certain vSnap virtual appliances distributed with IBM Spectrum
Protect Plus 10.1.3 were created with the root user's shell set
to /sbin/nologin. When updating these appliances to vSnap
10.1.5, the update process failed if invoked as "sudo
<installer>" because the installer tried to switch to a root
    shell which was unavailable.

Newer virtual appliances created with IBM Spectrum Protect Plus
10.1.4 and later contain the correct setting of /bin/bash for
the root user's shell. For the older appliances, the shell must
be reset during upgrade. This has been resolved by checking for
the invalid shell setting during the vSnap upgrade process and
    resetting if it is invalid.

Note that if the invalid setting is detected, the upgrade
process resets it and then quits in order for the changes to
take effect. The upgrade must then be retried for it to continue
    successfully.
