IT30680: SPECTRUM SCALE SNAPSHOT BASED MMBACKUP MIGHT FAIL DUE TO A MISLEADING ANS2168W IN MULTIPLE SP SERVERS HSM ENVIRONMENT.

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Spectrum Protect Space Management (HSM) client can be configured
  to use multiple SP servers by using dsmmigfs addmultiserver,
  querymultiserver, and removemultiserver commands.
  In an environment with this type of configuration, objects that
  are backed up or migrated are coupled with the particular SP
  server that they have been sent to.
  
  However, when trying to back up objects using the dsmc
  -snapshotroot option, either directly or indirectly via the
  mmbackup -S option, the backup operation might experience
  unexpected ANS1228E
  and ANS2168W  messages.
  
  Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
  1) create a Spectrum Scale snapshot:
  /usr/lpp/mmfs/bin/mmcrsnapshot gpfs1 snap1
  2) back it up using mmbackup command:
  /usr/lpp/mmfs/bin/mmbackup gpfs1 -S snap1 --tsm-servers SERVER1
  -t incremental
  
  The dsmerror log might show a large number of the following
  messages each time the backup is run:
  ANS1228E Sending of object '/gpfs1/projects/test.jpg' failed.
  ANS2168W Can not write SERVERNAME attribute.
  
  
  
  Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
  7.1.x and 8.1.x BA clients running on AIX GPFS and Linux GPFS in
  multiple servers HSM environment.

Problem conclusion

• The problem has been fixed so that it no longer occurs.
  As a possible work around, use the mmbackup command that is
  based on the live GPFS layout i.e. without using any GPFS
  snapshot. If Space Management (HSM) client is used, the user may
  also migrate or pre-migrate files prior to the snapshot creation
  and the backup.
