Error description

  • Configuring an IBM Spectrum Protect Plus vSnap pool after
installing the 10.1.4 vSnap on a UEFI machine fails with:
ERROR: PoolCreateError: Failed to create pool: Command failed:
The ZFS modules are not loaded.; Try running '/sbin/modprobe
zfs' as root to load them.
During the 10.1.4 vSnap install, the following error can be
    seen:
    Configuring kernel...
WARNING: Failed to configure GRUB to make 4.19.27-1.el7.x86_64
    the new default kernel.
The 10.1.4 vSnap requires the machine to boot to the included
    customized kernel or
    vSnap fails to initialize.
    Versions affected: 10.1.4
    Keywords: TS002463844 SPP ISPP

Local fix

  • 1 - Run command to list boot entries: grep "^menuentry"
    /etc/grub2-efi.cfg
2 - Look for the entry whose kernel version is 4.19.27-1. Copy
the full entry name (portion in single quotes).
    3 - Run the command: grub2-set-sefault <entry name including
    quotes>
Example: grub2-set-default 'Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server
    (4.19.27-1.el7.x86_64) 7.6 (Maipo)'
    4 - Run the command: grub2-mkconfig -o
    /boot/efi/EFI/redhat/grub.cfg
5 - Reboot the system. Run "uname -r" to confirm the kernel
    version after reboot.

Problem conclusion

  • As part of the vSnap installation, Linux kernel version 4.19 is
installed and is set as the default kernel. When setting the
default kernel in the boot configuration, the vSnap installer
did not correctly take into account the fact that grub
configuration file is named differently on UEFI systems. The
problem has been resolved by correctly distinguishing between
UEFI and BIOS systems and ensuring that the appropriate grub
    configuration is updated accordingly.
