Error description

  • The server may display ANR8914I and ANR8792E messages, and mark
the drive offline without I/O error.

    Problem Description:
The server may detect the cleaning request of the drive(s) based
on the result of checking log sense data. Based on the data, the
server will display ANR8914I and ANR8792E messages. As a
result, the server marks the drive(s) offline without specific
    I/O error.

When this issue occurs, ANR8914I and ANR8792E are displayed in
the server activity log without other I/O error, as below:

    ANR8914I Drive <drive name>
    (/dev/lin_tape/by-id/IBMtape-xxxmmmmm) in library <library name>
    needs to be cleaned.
ANR8792E Unrecoverable drive failures on drive <drive name>
    (/dev/lin_tape/by-id/IBMtape-xxxmmmmm);drive is now marked
    offline.

Additional information about the sense data should be displayed
    with ANR8792E.

    L2/Customer Diagnostics:
    - This issue may occur when the cleaning of drives relies on the
library automatic cleaning function. They can see the parameter
CLEANFREQuency of the drive is set to NONE in the output of
    query drive command, as below:

    IBM Spectrum Protect: SERVER01> Query DRive <drive name> F=D
    Library Name: <library name>
    Drive Name: <drive name>
    ........
    Cleaning Frequency (Gigabytes/ASNEEDED/NONE): NONE

    - If IBM lin_tape device driver is used, they can see
SIOC_LOG_SENSE_PAGE command in IBM lin_tape driver trace, as
    below:

    IBMtapeX-----mmmmm <timestamp>
       ......
       lin_tape_drive_ioctl: STOFFL command
    IBMChgrX-----nnnnn <timestamp>
       Changer device opened.
       IBMtapeX-----mmmmm <timestamp>
       lin_tape_drive_ioctl: SIOC_LOG_SENSE_PAGE command
       lin_tape_drive_ioctl: SIOC_LOG_SENSE_PAGE command
       ......

    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions affected:
All supported versions of Tivoli Storage Manager and IBM
Spectrum Protect server on all platforms.

    Initial Impact:
    Low

    Additional Keywords:

Local fix

  • Issue the following administrative command for the drive after
the clean drive finished by the library operation.

    UPDate DRive <library name> <drive name> ONLine=Yes.

Problem conclusion

  • This problem was fixed.
Affected platforms for reported release: AIX, HP-UX, Linux,
    Solaris, and Windows.
Platforms fixed: AIX, Linux, and Windows.

ANR8943E A hardware or tape media error occurred during an
    operation on library ABC, OP=XYZ, CC=OPQ, KEY=XX, ASC=YY,
    ASCQ=ZZ, SENSE=abcdefghigklmn
    Explanation
The error might be related to hardware, tape media, or
    configuration issues.
    systemAction
System operations continue, but the specified library operation
fails. If the cleaning threshold is exceeded for a tape drive in
the library, the server marks the drive as being offline.
    UserResponse
To resolve the issue, take one or more of the following actions:
Ensure that the DEVICE parameter that is associated with the
library was identified correctly in the DEFINE PATH command. To
query the path, use the QUERY PATH command. To update the path,
    use the UPDATE PATH command.
Ensure that the library device is turned on and ready for
    operation.
If the library device has an access door, ensure that the door
    is closed.
If the cleaning threshold is exceeded for a tape drive in the
library, clean the tape drive. Then, bring the drive online by
issuing the UPDATE DRIVE command with the ONLINE=YES setting. To
verify that the drive is online, you can issue the QUERY DRIVE
    command with the F=D setting.
If a volume in a virtual tape library has insufficient memory,
review the library configuration and make any necessary
adjustments. For more information about the values of the KEY,
ASC, and ASCQ fields, see the library and drive reference
    manuals.
