IT26952: ALLOW NUMERIC FIELDS TO BE SET TO AN EMPTY STRING WHEN SERLIALIZING A MESSAGE WITH DFDL

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• A CTDU4132E error is seen when serializing a message when an
  empty string value is used with a numeric field. In previous
  versions of the code some numeric types such as int or long
  would not result in the error for empty string values but would
  instead return a 0 value. This APAR reverts the code to the
  previous case when the DFDL feature is set

Problem summary

  USERS AFFECTED:
  Users of IBM Integration Bus v10 and App Connect Enterprise v11
   who use the DFDL serializer to serialize messages that contain
  elements that have been set to "" by nodes in a flow.
  
  
  Platforms affected:
  z/OS, MultiPlatform

  PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
  In previous versions of IIB the DFDL code would allow elements
  with numeric types to have "" as a value. This would then be
  converted to a zero value when serialising. Stricter type
  checking was introduced in the DFDL code which would not accept
  the "" value as it was a string instead of a number. IIB flows
  that were migrated from the older version would then stop
  working.
  

Problem conclusion

• An environment variable,
  "MQSI_DFDL_SERIALIZE_EMPTY_STRINGS_IN_NUMERICS" was added that
  would cause the DFDL code to behave as in previous versions and
  accept "" as a value for numerically typed fields, converting
  them to a zero value.
