Error description

  • A VM backup can fail with the following error message:

Unprotected vm: myVM. Last error: [(Cannot find target VMDK
    file)
(Error in create or resize of destination disk for ([DATASTORE]
    myVM/myVM.vmdk))]
This issue can occur in the following scenario:

    Backup #1
VM1 and VM2 backup to target vsnap volume1.
For some reason volume 1 expires and is removed by maintenance
(backup schedule to infrequent, short or repeated failed
    backups)
    Backup #2
Next backup will create new vsnap volume2
    VM1 backup succeeds to volume2
    VM2 fails for some reason.
At this point, VM2 will fail with the resize vmdk error (this
is because there is still old metadata for VM2 in the catalog).

    Virgo log:
    Unmounting
    /sppvadp__vsnap_vpool1_fs218_10.74.100.141_1539608401181...

    /sppvadp__vsnap_vpool1_fs218_10.74.100.141_1539608401181...
The backup job failed. Error: (Cannot find target VMDK file)
(Error in create or resize of destination disk for ([datastore]
    myVM/myVM.vmdk))
(Cannot find target VMDK file) (Error in create or resize of
    destination disk for ([datastore] myVM/myVM.vmdk))

    Affected versions: 10.1.0, 10.1.1, 10.1.2

    Keywords: TS001493877 snap SPP ISPP

Local fix

  • Force a rebase (Full) backup of the VM. This can only be done
    in 10.1.2 and later.

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Plus level may report:
"[(Cannot find target VMDK file) (Error in create or resize of
     destination disk]"

It was found that if a large number of VMs are rebased to a new
target volume and a VM fails, catalog/database will be in a
condition that prevents an incremental backup from succeeding.
The fix ensures that if a rebase fails, the catalog/database
will be in a state that ensures incremental for a VM will
    succeed.

Temporary fix
