Error description

  • When Spectrum Protect Plus is installed in a NAT (Network
Address Translation) environment, the restore of a VM fails with
     following messages:

ERROR,...,Mount hypervisor NFS volumes: Failed to mount NFS
datastore (DataStore1) to ESX server (esxi.host.name). Error =
    (HypervisorVolumeMountException).
ERROR,...,Verify that the maximum number of NFS volumes on the
ESX host has not been reached and that the ESX host can
    communicate with the NFS server.
ERROR,...,Mount hypervisor NFS volumes: Failed to create NAS
datastore (DataStore1) on ESX server (esxi.host.name). Exception
    (com.catalogic.ecx.serviceprovider.common.hypervisor.exception.H
    ypervisorVolumeMountException) reports: (An error occurred
    during host configuration.: )
ERROR,...,Mount hypervisor NFS volumes: Failed to mount NFS
volume (DataStore1) on all specified hosts.

    IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected:
    IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.1

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:

Review the network environment for possible NAT (Network Address
    Translation) issues.
In this specific scenario, the Spectrum Protect Plus host with
integrated vSnap and the ESXi host were in different networks,
    connected using NAT.
In such a setup, communication between vSnap server and ESXi
host will fail. This happens because the ESXi host cannot reach
the vSnap server because the vSnap IP address is behind NAT.
This communication failure causes a mount failure from the vSnap
NFS share on the ESXi host during the restore, causing the
    restore to fail.

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Plus has improved support for various
network configurations. One such configuration involves
customers running in an environment that includes Network
Address Translation. A configuration parameter has been
introduced allowing IBM Spectrum Protect Plus server to connect
to an IBM Spectrum Protect Plus vSnap server that sits behind
a private NAT'd network configured with DNS. By default IBM
Spectrum Protect Plus server connects to a remote vSnap server
by IP address. With the addition of the configuration parameter
it is now possible for the SPP server to connect with the vSnap
server by hostname. The following property file facilitates
    this configuration:
      /opt/ECX/virgo/repository/ecx-usr/

      com.syncsort.dp.xsb.serviceprovider.properties

    and the following property:

      recovery.connecttostoragebyhostname=true

must be set to true (default is false) in order to establish
    communication by hostname.
