IT24616: DSMAGENT CRASHES DURING A VSS BACKUP WHEN FAILING OVER TO THE REPLICATION TARGET SERVER

APAR status

Error description

  • A VSS backup operation by an IBM Spectrum Protect
    Backup-Archive Client or any API Client and Data Protection
    Client on the Microsoft Windows platform fails with the
    following error in the output and the application log file
    (e.g. dsmsched.log for the Backup-Archive Client,
    tdpexc.log for Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server,
    tdpsql.log for Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server):
    ANS1017E (RC-50)  Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure.
    The error indicates that the dsmagent component has become
    unresponsive and has crashed.
    
    Diagnosing the issue:
    ---------------------
    In the dsmagent's Client option file (dsm.opt)
    the Client option USEREPLICATIONFailover is set to Yes either
    explicitly, or implicitly as this is the default value.
    
    The Microsoft Windows application event log shows messages
    concerning the dsmagent crash and also the location of a crash
    dump if the dsmcrash.dmp and dsmcrash.log was not created.
    
    The dsmagent's error log may not show any hints concerning the
    issue.
    
    The API error log file for a Data Protection Client shows:

    A dsmagent service trace running at the time may show that the
    stream was interrupted by an additional connection from a
    dsmcad process, for example:

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Spectrum Protect VSS Requestor has been updated to
    correctly disable backup operations when the session with the
    IBM Spectrum Protect Server is in a failover mode.
