Error description
Restoring a singledisk (e.g. hard disk 2) into an existing VM requires that a disk with the same label and the same capacity exists in the Virtual Machine configuration where the disk is being restored. While the restore currently completes successfully without actually restoring any data, this operation should fail. Example: tsm> restore vm "VMNAME:vmdk=Hard Disk 2" Restore function invoked. Restore VM command started. Total number of virtual machines to process: 1 Restore of Virtual Machine 'VMNAME' started Starting Full VM restore of VMware Virtual Machine 'VMNAME' target node name='VMWARENODE', data mover node name='VMWARENODE_DM' Virtual machine: 'VMNAME' disk: 'Hard Disk 1' is excluded from restore by user. Restoring VM configuration information for 'VMNAME' ANS2145W Warning - updating an existing virtual machine named 'VMNAME'. The restore operation continues. Creating snapshot for virtual machine 'VMNAME' Restoring 0 VMNAME [Done] Successful Full VM restore of Virtual Machine 'VMNAME' Removing snapshot for virtual machine 'VMNAME' Restore processing finished. Successful Full VM restore of VMware Virtual Machine 'VMNAME' target node name='VMWARENODE', data mover node name='VMWARENODE_DM' Total number of objects restored: 1 Total number of objects failed: 0 Total number of bytes transferred: 0 B Data transfer time: 0.00 sec Network data transfer rate: 0.00 KB/sec Aggregate data transfer rate: 0.00 KB/sec Elapsed processing time: 00:00:15 Note the successful restore of the VM, while no data was restored. This restore should - Change the restore summary to a failed restore operation. - Have a message stating that the disk that is being restored must exist in the Virtual Machine. Documentation also needs to be enhanced to document the requirement that the disk being restored must exist in the Virtual Machine. Products affected: IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client version 7.1 and higher on Windows x64 and Linux x86 platforms. Note: The Backup-Archive Client is a prerequisite to using the Data Protection for VMware. In Data Protection for VMware environments, the Backup-Archive Client is also known as the data mover. This problem also affects IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection for VMware 8.1. If you are using Data Protection for VMware 8.1, refer to APAR IT23320 Initial Impact: Medium Additional Keywords: TSM, Tivoli, Storage, Manager, TDP4VE
Local fix
Create a disk with the same label and the same size in the Virtual Machine and try the restore again.
