Error description

  • Under specific conditions, backup and restore VM operations can
result in an application crash. The specific conditions are:
     - The VM's UUID has been changed between backups
     - Backups have been run with the option 'testflag
       VMBACKUP_UPDATE_UUID'
     - Backup operations have spanned application versions
     - Backups have abnormally terminated during processing

Note that all of the above conditions must be met at the same
time for this issue to occur.

An indication that UUIDs have changed is the presence of the
    following message during backups:
ANS1715E A file space already exists for virtual machine <VM
Name>, but with a different virtual machine UUID <UUID from
the file space> than the current one <UUID returned from the
     VM>.

Those conditions introduce the possibility of filesystem
information for the VMs being corrupted. This can lead to an
application crash, which produces the following stack output:
     dsmagent!StrnCpy+0x26
     dsmagent!getVchar+0x65
     dsmagent!vmGetFsInfo+0x151
     dsmagent!vmFinalizeRestoreVM+0x453

     dsmagent!vmVMwareRestoreVM+0x1a5

     dsmagent!DccRestoreConsumer::HandleQueue+0x622
     dsmagent!DccRestoreConsumer::Run+0x167
     dsmagent!startThread2+0x81
     dsmagent!startThread+0x9
     msvcr110!beginthreadex+0x107
     msvcr110!endthreadex+0x192
     kernel32!BaseThreadInitThunk+0x22
     ntdll!RtlUserThreadStart+0x34

The probability of this crash occurring is dependant on how the
system memory is allocated to the application when the operation
    is initiated.

    Products affected:
IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection
for VMware version 8.1.0 on Linux and Windows

This problem also affects IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive
Client which is the data mover for Data Protection for
VMware 7.1.6. If you are using Data Protection for VMware
    7.1.6 refer to APAR IT19537.

    Initial Impact: Medium

    Additional Keywords: TSMVE TSM4VE SPVE

Local fix

  • Remove the 'testflag VMBACKUP_UPDATE_UUID' option from datamover
option files. Initiate a full VM backup of VMs which meet
the conditions to establish a new recovery point.
