APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• During a backup of a VMware virtual machine, where incremental
  forever process is used, the virtual machines control files and
  bitmap files are verified for integrity errors.
  If a problem is detected, the incermental backup cannot continue
  and the
  corrective action is taken based the option VMVERIFYIFACTION
  parameters.
  In that case data protection for VMware issues a message to the
  client console and saves it to the dsmerror.log.
  
  The error is that the backup continues instead of taking the
  action described by the VMverifyIFAction option.
  
  Note: This can only happen if the data mover has LANFREE
  enabled on versions starting with 7.1.4.
  
  Users can look in the dsmerror.log file for the following
  message to see if they are affected:
  
  ANS9921E Virtual machine disk, vm_name (disk_label),
  verification check failed (xxx/yyy).
  
  Backups of a virtual machine issuing this message
  should take an Incremental Forever process full backup
  to fix the data integrity failure.
  

Local fix

• Disable LANFREE by removing the option from appropriate dsm.sys
  stanza or dsm.opt file.

Problem conclusion

• Data mover has been modified so that the VMVERIFYIFACTION option
  is executed correctly on a data integrity issue discovery.
  

Temporary fix

• Add the following test flag to your options file:
  TESTFLAG VMBACKUP_FORCECTLOVERLANFREE
  
  Note: As a consequence of using this testflag, some data
  transferred over a LAN FREE environment will be sent using
  TCP/IP instead.
