IT16633: SNAPDIFF BACKUP CAN FAIL WITH ANS2831E WHEN MULTIPLE SHARES ARE BACKED UP

Error description

  • When backing up Netapp shares using snapdiff, the snapdiff
    backup can fail when multiple shares are included in the domain.
    The problem was first seen when taking a snapdiff backup of 13
    shares, while the backup was working fine when taking a
    snapdiff backup of 12 shares.
    
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    The dsmerror.log will show:
    
    ANS2831E Incremental by snapshot difference cannot be performed
    on '\\filer.domain.com\share' as it is of type 'Unknown' and is
    not a NetApp/N-Series 'CIFS' volume
    
    When looking in the trace, it is seen that Windows WNet API
    returns only one share when we have too many shares.
    
    ..\..\common\winnt\psfsinfo.cpp(2488): WNetEnum()- total number
    of entries  = 1
    
    This failure is related to the length of the domain names used.
    When these are long names, Windows WNet API can fail because
    of insufficient buffer size.

Local fix

  • Option 1: Lower the number is shares.
    Option 2: Use IP addresses and not the FQDN of the share.
