Error description
Trace is enabled on an MQ Managed File Transfer agent, using the command: fteSetAgentTraceLevel -traceAgent <trace specification>=<level> <agent name> When trace is turned off, using the command: fteSetAgentTraceLevel -traceAgent <trace specification>=off <agent name> no more messages are written to the agent's output0.log file until the agent is stopped and restarted. For example, when using an MQ V8.0.0.2 Managed File Transfer agent, running the commands fteSetAgentTraceLevel -traceAgent com.ibm.wmqfte=all <agent name> fteSetAgentTraceLevel -traceAgent com.ibm.wmqfte=off <agent name> fteStopAgent <agent name> result in the following messages being written to the agent's output0.log file: BFGUT0001I: The trace specification has changed to "com.ibm.wmqfte=all". BFGUT0001I: The trace specification has changed to "com.ibm.wmqfte=off". BFGAG0169I: A request to shut down this agent has been received. BFGAG0060I: The agent has completed its current transfers and is now stopping. When the same commands are run using an MQ V8.0.0.4 Managed File Transfer agent, only the message shown below is written to the agent's output0.log file: BFGUT0001I: The trace specification has changed to "com.ibm.wmqfte=all". No more messages are written to the file until the agent is restarted.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** USERS AFFECTED: This issue affects two categories of user: Category 1: ----------------- Users of: - The WebSphere MQ V7.5.0.6 Managed File Transfer component. - The MQ V8.0.0.3 and V8.0.0.4 Managed File Transfer component. who enable and then disable trace for an agent. Category 2: ----------------- Users of: - The WebSphere MQ V7.5.0.5 Managed File Transfer component (and earlier). - The MQ V8.0.0.2 Managed File Transfer component (and earlier). who have applied an interim fix for APAR IT04219, and enable and then disable trace for an agent. who enable and disable trace for an agent. Platforms affected: MultiPlatform **************************************************************** PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: APAR IT04219 addressed an issue where running the command: fteSetAgentTraceLevel -traceAgent <trace specification>=off <agent name> did not completely turn off trace as expected. After the command was run, trace entries from the Java Message Queueing Interface (JMQI) component (which is used by Managed File Transfer agents to communicate with MQ queue managers) continued to be written to the trace file. The fix for IT04219 ensured that tracing of the JMQI component was explicitly turned off if the fteSetAgentTraceLevel command was run specifying a trace level of "off". As a result of the fix for IT04219, the mechanism used by an agent to publish information to it's Event Log (output0.log), which is closely coupled to the tracing infrastructure, was also turned off when the fteSetAgentTraceLevel command was run specifying a trace level of "off". This meant that once trace was turned off, no more messages would be written to the agent's Event Log until the agent was restarted.
Problem conclusion
Since APAR IT04219 was taken, two additional APARs have been raised and closed which ensure that Managed File Transfer agent trace only contains information from the Java Message Queueing Interface (JMQI) component if the trace specification used to enable trace includes the package "com.ibm.mq". These APARs are: IT09433 : MQ MANAGED FILE TRANSFER TRACE GENERATES UNWANTED TRACE POINTS IT11278: WEBSPHERE MQ AMS ALWAYS GENERATE TRACE POINTS IN MFT, CLASSES FOR JAVA AND CLASSES FOR JMS TRACE OUTPUT As a result of these APARs, the issue that was originally reported in IT04219 will no longer occur. Because of this, the changes for IT04219 have been backed out, which means that information will continue to be written to an agent's Event Log after agent trace has been turned off. NOTE: The "Problem Conclusion" section of IT04219 contains the following information: "[The code changes for IT04219] allows the release of the lock on the trace output file..." The fix for this APAR reverts this behaviour, so that the trace file will now be locked until the agent is stopped. --------------------------------------------------------------- The fix is targeted for delivery in the following PTFs: Version Maintenance Level v7.5 7.5.0.7 v8.0 8.0.0.5 The latest available FTE maintenance can be obtained from 'Fix List for WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition 7.0' http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27015313 The latest available MQ maintenance can be obtained from 'WebSphere MQ Recommended Fixes' http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=171&uid=swg27006037 If the maintenance level is not yet available information on its planned availability can be found in 'WebSphere MQ Planned Maintenance Release Dates' http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=171&uid=swg27006309 ---------------------------------------------------------------
