Error description
After adding RDM or independent disks to a virtual machine, a subsequent incremental backup of that VM may fail with errors similar to the following: ANS1773I The virtual machine 'CLIENT-VM' contains one or more independent disks and these disks are excluded from the VM backup. ANS4174E Full VM backup of VMware Virtual Machine 'CLIENT-VM' failed with RC=-1 mode=Incremental Forever - Incremental, target node name='CLIENT-VM-TARGET', data mover node name='CLIENT-VM-MOVER' ANS5283E The operation was unsuccessful. The incremental backup will only fail if the new disks are added after a full backup of the VM has already been performed. If the independent and/or RDM disks are added prior to the initial full backup, then the backup will complete successfully. | MDVREGR 7.1.4.0-TIV-5698ISMCL | IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected: Linux and Windows clients 7.1.4.0 and higher Initial Impact: Medium
Local fix
Performing a full backup of the affected VM will resolve the error condition and allow for subsequent incremental backups to complete successfully.

Problem conclusion
During incremental VM backups, we make calls to get certain information about each of the VM's disks. The calls are failing when made for RDM or independent disks that were added after the last full backup. The solution was to use a return code that indicates success after successfully using alternate methods to get this information.
