IT13185: MISSING MESSAGES AND SUMMARY_EXTENDED TABLE RECORDS FOR HYPER-V BACKUPS USING VERSION 7.1.4.X DATA MOVER (BACKUP-ARCHIVE CLIENT)

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • During backup of Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs), the
    IBM Spectrum Protect (formerly known as IBM Tivoli Storage
    Manager) Backup-Archive Client is supposed to generate extended
    summary information that is displayed in the Backup-Archive
    client output and stored in the IBM Spectrum Protect Server
    SUMMARY_EXTENDED table. However, beginning with the version
    7.1.4.0 Backup-Archive Client, this information is missing.
    
    This message should be displayed when the backup begins for each
    VM:
    
      Starting Full VM backup of 'Hyper-V' Virtual Machine 'x'
              mode:                        'x'
              target node name:            'x'
              data mover node name:        'x'
              application protection type: 'Hyper-V'
              application(s) protected:    'n/a'
    
    This message should be displayed when the backup ends for each
    VM:
    
      Successful Full VM backup of 'Hyper-V' Virtual Machine 'x'
              mode:                 'x'
              target node name:     'x'
              data mover node name: 'x'
    
    The Backup-Archive Client should also send a status record to
    the Server's SUMMARY_EXTENDED table:
    
            START_TIME: x
              END_TIME: x
              ACTIVITY: BACKUP
      ACTIVITY_DETAILS: Hyper-V
         ACTIVITY_TYPE: x
            SUB_ENTITY: x
              EXAMINED: 1
            SUCCESSFUL: x
    
    The Backup-Archive Client needs to be corrected so that above
    information is properly generated.
    
    Note that the other output displayed and logged by the Backup-
    Archive Client is correct. The scope of the problem is the
    information that is missing, as described above.
    
    This problem affects the version 7.1.4.0 and 7.1.4.1 Backup-
    Archive Client when used as a data mover for Data Protection
    for Hyper-V.
    

Local fix

  • Until a fix is available, check the Server activity log for
    backup status information. For example:

      mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss ANE4142I (Session: n, Node: X)    virtual

       number of virtual machines processed: n
    
    An alternative is to inspect the dsmsched.log file on the
    Hyper-V host where the Backup-Archive Client runs.

Problem conclusion

  • Incorrect condition check resulted in the backup summary record
    not being created. This resulted in missing message in the
    backup VM output. Condition has been fixed.
    

Temporary fix

  • A fix for this problem is currently targeted for Tivoli Storage
    Manager Client on Windows for interim fix package 7.1.4.2
    Note 1: The Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Client is a part of the
    Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V. In Data Protection for
    Microsoft Hyper-V environments, the TSM Client is also known as
    the data mover.
    Note 2: This is subject to change at the discretion of IBM.
