Error description

  • VSSUSESYSTEMPROVIDER YES is ignored when processing the
    Automated System Recovery (ASR) portion of Microsoft Windows
    system state backup. This can prevent successful system state
    backup operations when multiple VSS providers are installed on
    the system and the Microsoft Windows system provider is not the
    default provider.
    
    When this problem occurs, the following error messages are
    written to the dsmsched.log file:
    
    ANS1468E Backing up Automated System Recovery (ASR) files
    failed.  No files will be backed up.
    ANS2698E Snapshot operation failed.
    
    These messages are written to the dsmerror.log file:
    
    ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered.

    ANS1468E Backing up Automated System Recovery (ASR) files
    failed.  No files will be backed up.
    
    
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    If the system state backup ends with the error messages
    described in this APAR , two or more providers are installed,
    and VSSUSESYSTEMPROVIDER YES is ineffective, then this APAR is
    the probable cause.
    Use the command "vssadmin list providers" to enumerate and
    display the installed providers
    
    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: All Tivoli Storage
    Manager Clients v6.3.x, 6.4.x and v7.1.x on Windows Platform

    The code that handles backup of the Automated System Recovery
    (ASR) portion of system state backup was ignoring the
    VSSUSESYSTEMPROVIDER option setting.
    

Problem conclusion

  • The problem has been fixed so that the ASR related code will use
    the system provider when VSSUSESYSTEMPROVIDER YES is in effect.
    This will enable the backup-archive client to use the system
    provider to correctly process the VSS ASR Writer during system
    state backup operations.
    

Temporary fix

  • A fix for this problem is currently targeted for interim fix
    package 7.1.4.2. Until the interim fix is actually available
    this information is subject to change at the discretion of IBM.
