IT12467: "ANS9180W AN ENTRY IN THE PASSWORD FILE COULD NOT BE DECRYPTED" DURING VM BACKUPS ON LINUX

IBM Spectrum Protect client 7.1.4.x interim fix downloads

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• The following errors might be seen in the dsmerror.log of the
  data mover node during VMware guest backups only on Linux
  platforms:
  
  ANS9180W An entry in the password file could not be decrypted.
  ANS0282E Password file is not available.
  
  Also, for a scheduled operation:
  ANS2050E TSM needs to prompt for the password but cannot prompt
  because the process is running in the background.
  
  This happens in a random manner. Sometimes the backups succeed,
  sometimes the above issue appears and the node password needs
  to be resynched and stored again in the TSM.PWD file with the
  client command "dsmc set password".
  
  Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
  Tivoli Storage Manager Client 7.1.2.x and higher on Linux only
  
  Initial Impact: Medium
  
  Additional Keywords: thread fail VM backup password corrupted
  

Local fix

• Use the client 7.1.1.x or lower
  or
  reset the TSM.PWD file with the "dsmc set password" command
  each time the issue appears and retry the backup until the
  fixing level is available.

  * Data Protection for VMware environments, the TSM Client is   *
  * also known as the data mover.                                *

Problem conclusion

• Concurrent password decrypting is fixed so the password reset no
  longer occurs during VM backup.
  

Temporary fix

• A fix for this problem is currently targeted for Tivoli Storage
  Manager Client on Linux x86_64 for interim fix package 7.1.4.1
  Note1: Until a Data Protection for VMware packaged fix of a
  fixing Tivoli Storage Manager Client level is available, Data
  Protection for VMware customers can install an use a fixed level
  of the the Tivoli Storage Manager Client in their environment.
  Note 2: This is subject to change at the discretion of IBM.
