IT12435: ANR8311E ENOCONNECT 50 TAPE ERROR CAUSES IMMEDIATE CLIENT BACKUP FAILURE ON AIX

APAR status

Error description

  • When a tape drive experiences an errno 50 ENOCONNECT failure,
    an AIX Tivoli Storage Manager server will immediately fail the
    client backup session using that drive.  An example of the
    error received is as follows:
    
    11/22/15 06:59:24 ANR8311E An I/O error occurred while
                      accessing drive IBMDRV0 (/dev/rmt0) for
                      WRITE operation, errno = 50, rc = 2863.
    
    On non-AIX platforms, the Tivoli Storage Manager server will
    enter error recovery for a similar error and attempt to find
    a working drive for the backup session. The Server will
    continue to loop through this retry logic up until the
    RESOURCETIMEOUT value specified on the Server.
    
    The AIX platform should use the same retry logic as other
    platforms and not immediately fail the backup when ENOCONNECT
    is received for a particular drive.

  • Restart the client backup after resolving any tape device
    errors.
