APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Backup, restore, archive, retrieve, recall, migrate or reconcile
    operations can fail or hang using the Backup-Archive Client,
    Data Protection for Databases, Exchange Server or VMware, Space
    Management or HSM for Windows. These IBM Spectrum Protect
    products are affected beginning with version 7.1.3.0 and higher
    levels on all supported operating systems.
    
    This issue is caused by memory corruption. Its symptoms depend
    among others on the operation, the component used and the
    operating system.
    Examples:
    - The backup-archive client core dumped.
    - A recall using HSM on Linux hung or terminated prematurely
      with the message "ANS4023E Error processing '..': file
      input/output error."
    

Local fix

  • Set testflag MEMPOOLSIMPLESEARCH in the client options
    file as a workaround for at least partial relief. However,
    note that this may degrade performance.

Problem conclusion

  • Memory corruption problem has been fixed so that it no longer
    occurs.
    

Temporary fix

  • A fix for this problem is currently targeted for 7.1.4.1 interim
    fix package. Until this interim fix is actually available this
    information is subject to change at the discretion of IBM.
