IT11835: BACKUP MIGHT FAIL WITH OPTION FILE ACCESS ERROR (ANS2261E OR ANS1035S)

Error description

  • The backup of the DB2 database or archive of LOG file or just
    the query for backups using db2adutl command might fail with
    error "ANS2261E TSM client failed to lock options file."
    when issued as the instance owner (non-root user).
    
    A VMware backup for multiple guests started with the Tivoli
    Storage Manager for Virtual Environments - Data Protection for
    VMware Web GUI might fail with the following messages found in
    the data mover node dsmerror.log:
    ANS1035S Options file '' could not be found, or it cannot be
    read.
    ANS1035S Options file '*' could not be found, or it cannot be
    read.
    ANS4174E Full VM backup of VMware Virtual Machine '<vmname>'
    failed with RC=406 mode=Incremental Forever - Incremental,
    target node name='<target node>', data mover node
    name='<datamover name>'
    
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    The problem is with the locking procedure of file 'dsmopt.lock'.
    The API trace with SERVICE flag reports this problem as:
    ClientOptions::lockOptionsFile(): Can't create lock file
    '/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin64/dsmopt.lock': access denied.
    Disabling option file locking
    
    
    Data Protection Versions Affected:
    IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client at version 7.1.2 and above on
    Unix and Linux systems.

Local fix

  • The problem with "ANS2261E" error message can be bypassed by
    setting 777 authority for
    both:
    - the '/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin64/dsmopt.lock' file
    - the '/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin64' directory.
    For Virtual Machine backup, use the client data mover command
    line or GUI to perform the backup of multiple guests or run one
    guest backup at a time using the Web GUI

Problem conclusion

  • Now dsmopt.lock is created in "/tmp" directory since we could
    not create lock file
    in the directory where TSM client is installed. And we could not
    create this file in the directory where
    error.log is stored since this directory could be specified with
    "errorlogname" option in dsm.sys file
    but to read this option we should has already create dsmopt.lock
    to protect the options file.
    Also it was corrected the issue that in some case file
    descriptor for dsmopt.lock were not closed.
    

Temporary fix

  • A fix for this problem is included in interim fix package
    7.1.4.4.
