IT04831: DATA PROTECTION FOR HYPER-V INCREMENTAL FOREVER BACKUPS MIGHT BE CORRUPTED

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Incremental forever backups of Microsoft Hyper-V virtual
    machines might be corrupted. The problem is due to a logic error
    in the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client (data mover)
    code that identifies changed data blocks. No error messages are
    logged during affected backup operations. However the affected
    backup data is incomplete and thus corrupted.
    Restore operations for the corrupted backup data are also
    reported as successful. No error messages are logged.
    
    The problem is not detectable until the restored data is
    accessed, either from a fully restored system or from a snapshot
    mounted by the Recovery Agent. Possible symptoms include:
    
    * One or more files might not contain the expected content
    * Operating system messages indicate file system corruption
    * Other erratic operating system or application behavior
    
    Portions of the corrupted Hyper-V backups might be recoverable.
    For example, it might be possible to use the Recovery Agent to
    recover certain needed files provided that those files were not
    affected by the missing backup data. It is not possible to
    determine in advance whether a given file in a Hyper-V virtual
    machine backup is affected.
    
    Affected product versions: Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual
    Environments: Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V 7.1.1 when
    using Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive Client version
    7.1.1.0 as the data mover.
    

Local fix

  • None. Do not perform incremental forever backups of Microsoft
    Hyper-V virtual machines until a fixing Tivoli Storage Manager
    Backup-Archive Client (data mover) version is available. The fix
    is currently targeted for interim fix version 7.1.1.1 at the end
    of October. This information is subject to change at the
    discretion of IBM.

    *                    original name. The default location for   *
    *                    this file is                              *

    *                 2. Perform an "incremental forever full"     *
    *                    (-mode=iffull) backup for all Hyper-V     *
    *                    virtual machines in order to establish    *
    *                    a new incremental forever backup chain.   *

    *                 3. Resume Normal "incremental forever        *
    *                    incremental" (-mode=ifincr) backups.      *

Problem conclusion

  • The data mover logic has been fixed so that changed data blocks
    are correctly identified and backed up.
