APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• The Tivoli Storage Manager client GUI "dsmj" on unix systems
  fails to start with:
  
  "Unknown system error. Please check the TSM Error log for any
  additional information."
  
  The file dsmj.log shows:
  
  IMBase (Constructor): dsmagent process exited with code: 0
  IMBase (Constructor): the real exit code is: -1
  ANS5179E TSM is unable to continue. Exiting program.
  
  
  The cause of the failure is that the TMPDIR operating system
  variable is set to a different path than the default of /tmp.
  
  If this variable is not set, /tmp would be the default and
  'dsmj' works fine.
  
  Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
  Tivoli Storage Manager client Versions 6.3.x 6.4.x 7.1.x on all
  supported UNIX platforms..

Local fix

• From a user login prompt export the TMPDIR variable to the /tmp
  path:
  #export TMPDIR=/tmp
  then run the GUI:
  #dsmj
  The change will be applied only for the current user login
  session.
