Error description
The Tivoli Storage Manager administrative client (dsmadmc) for Windows may incorrectly display non-ASCII characters on console. It may happen when an output from an administrative command like QUERY TOC or SELECT shows file names containing non-ASCII symbols. It is a "display only" problem, which is caused by the dsmadmc being not capable of handling Unicode strings. Customer/L2 Diagnostics: One of the examples of such symbols is a Euro sign (?). The output from QUERY TOC for the file name /Directory/file will be displayed as follows: 1) If the language setting on the Tivoli Storage Manager server is set to a UTF-8 conversion (LANG=EN_US in the dsmserv.opt file), the output from QUERY TOC may return the following, when the original Object Name includes the non-ASCII character ? (Euro): Object Name Hexadecimal Object Name -------------------- ------------------------------------- /Directory/(テ'ᆰeuro) xxxxxxe282acxxxxx This is a display problem for the Euro sign in the Object Name. The hexadecimal value of the Euro sign is e282ac. So there is a valid euro sign (e282ac) in UTF-8 format. 2) If the language setting on the Tivoli Storage Manager server is not set to a UTF-8 conversion, the output from QUERY TOC may return only dots (...) when the original Object Name includes the non-ASCII character ? (Euro): Object Name ------------------------------------------ ... Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: Tivoli Storage Manager admin client 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 7.1 on Windows Initial Impact: low Additional Keywords: TSM zz61 zz62 zz63 zz71 non-ASCII symbol
Local fix
On the Tivoli Storage Manager server side: ========================================== If the Tivoli Storage Manager server is not running on Windows, force using UTF-8 for locale settings by means of the LANGUAGE option in the dsmserv.opt. For example, set "LANGUAGE EN_US" for AIX or "LANGUAGE en_US.utf8" for Linux. Refer to the Tivoli Storage Manager server documentation for more details. Note: the fileset tivoli.tsm.server.msg-EN_US must be installed You must also set UTF-8 locale on the terminal along with "LANGuage AMENG" in the dsmserv.opt. For example, on AIX: export LANG=EN_US.UTF-8 export LC_ALL=EN_US.UTF-8 AMENG means the Tivoli Storage Manager server will use the locale setting of OS, in this case, it is EN_US.UTF-8. On the Tivoli Storage Manager Windows client side: ================================================== Redirect the dsmadmc output in a file and open this file in a unicode-aware tool (like Notepad). Note: For a combination of "Windows server - Windows client" there is no local fix for this issue.

Comments
Really the QUERY TOC command was never intended to support all possible languages. It is a "display only" problem since the administrative client is non-Unicode. It is a very serious task of making it Unicode-enabled. Tremendous changes should be done not only on the client but on the server side as well.
