    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * GIMUNZIP creates output data sets with *
    * incorrect space allocation.                                  *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    GIMZIP calculates a data set's allocated space in number of
    Records with a length of the data set's block size. It does
    this in an attempt to identify space in device independent
    units, just in case the track size differs on different device
    types. GIMZIP does this regardless of the space unit in which
    the original data set was allocated.
    GIMUNZIP therefore allocates new output data sets with space in
    Records, as identified by GIMZIP. Unfortunately when allocating
     a data set with space in Records, the system may calculate the
    actual number of tracks on the volume for the data set to be
    significantly larger than the original zipped data set. This
    means the resulting output data set is larger than expected,
    potentially leading to volume out of space conditions when many
    data sets are unzipped onto a single volume.

Problem conclusion

  • GIMUNZIP has been modified in SMP/E V3.7 to create new output
    data sets with space allocated in Tracks instead of Records.
    GIMUNZIP converts a data set's identified space in number of
    Records to Tracks, by assuming the output data set's device has
    3390 DASD device geometry, 56,664 bytes per track.
