Error description

  • An HCM customer uses filters for making changes to particular
device ranges in a very large I/O configuration with more than
10 processor configurations. Specifically, they select from the
menu->edit->device to filter devices to a certain type i.e
3390A; and when it's done they attempt to scroll up and down in
order to change subchannel set values for selected device
    ranges.
Before moving to HCM 2.3.4 from HCM 2.3.1, the results were
    almost instant.
After the upgrade navigating and making changes became almost
impossible, due to huge delays between initiation and completion
of an action (scroll, change, etc.).
Performance in stand-alone mode did ot suffer.

    ANALYSIS:
Using a provided .hcmz (compressed .hcm) file and the IODF with
a VERY large I/O configuration (more than 10 processor
configurations), followed the steps, listed in the Error
    Description section.
Indeed, performance of HCM was coming to practical halt at
certain points (scrolling, as an example).
Performance of the same version of HCM in stand-alone mode did
    NOT suffer

    KNOWN IMPACT:
With HCM 2.3.4, use of filters in the described scenario makes
completion of various tasks almost impossible when connected to
    the IODF.

    VERIFICATION STEPS:
    1. Start HCM 2.3.4 as connected to the host
    2. Load the IODF, that includes a large number of processor
configurations, into HCM - with or without an earlier
    created.hcmz.
    3. Select from the menu->edit->device and then invoke a filter
to produce a list of devices of a certain type (3390A in this
    particular case)
    4. When the filtered list of devices is built, attempt to scroll
up or down, initiate a chance of a subchannel set, etc.

    ADDITIONAL SYMPTOMS:
    no additional symptoms

Local fix

  • BYPASS/CIRCUMVENTION:
Use HCD on the z/OS host to make necessary changes

    RECOVERY ACTION:
    no recovery actions

Problem conclusion

  • It's caused by numerous calculation when showing value of
"Used SCHS for OS". The performance improves by applying this
APAR which optimizes the process to show the value of
    "Used SCHS for OS".
