IO19710: OPENING A DOC FILE IN INTERNET EXPLORER (IE) THIS CAUSES THE DOCUMENT MANAGER/MICROSOFT OFFICE INTEGRATION TO FAIL

IBM Document Manager Version 8.5 Fix Pack 4

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• When opening a DOC file in Internet Explorer this causes the
  DM/Office integration to fail.
  Recreation steps:
  1. Start the DM Client
  2. Start Internet Explorer (v9)
  3. Click (on a URI that points to an MS Word file or click) on
  the file
  4. Open
  5. Browse then select  All documents  in the bottom
  right-hand corner
  6. Browse to and select an MS Word file and press [Open]
  (either a .DOC or a .DOCX will cause the problem)
  7. Press OK, IE pops up a dialog
  8. Click  Open    IE appears to do nothing.
  9. Start MS Word
  ***Crash occurs***
  10. Select Close, MS Word is trying to recover your information
  but nothing happens
  11. Do steps 3-7 again
  12. The file opens in MS Word
  13. Select  File
  14. Then  Options
  15. Then  Add-ins
  16. DM is missing from the list of add-ins
  17. Select  disabled items   from the  Manage  drop
  down
  18. And press [Go] The DM Client integration has been disabled
  silently
  

Local fix

• Word and Excel are launched using OLE linking and embedding, or
  OLE Automation. The expected behavior is that the DM Add-in
  isn't activated when the office application is launched by OLE
  linking or OLE Automation, but this should not cause a crash.
  It is possible that IE 9 has a stricter check on the Add-in and
  this is why you only see a crash with IE9 and IE10.
  
  This requires a code change.

• IBM Document Manager Add-in is not activated when the office
  application is launched by OLE linking/embedding or OLE
  Automation.
