IO18733: ON ENHANCED, HARD DRIVES THAT ARE SWAPPED RESULTS IN A DUMP LOOP

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • In Classic mode, when you boot a system that has had the
physical location of a C: drive that has been CPREP'd and a D:
drive that has been DPREP'd are swapped, it would boot to a "No
    boot source found" message.
    .
In Enhanced mode, the same situation results in a dump loop.
Customer has requested the original or similar functionality to
be restored when using Enhanced mode to eliminate confusion or
cause any adverse effects by techs servicing their machines.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • When you boot an Enhanced mode system that has had the
physical location of a C: drive that has been CPRED'd and D:
drive that has been DPREP'd then they are swapped, results in a
    dump loop.
    .
This happens because 4690 OS is limited to boot from a CPREP'd
hard disk inserted in the correct physical HDD slot of a
    controller with two HDDs.

Problem conclusion

  • Add validation on DPREP'd HDDs so the system is able to detect
when no boot partition has been found on the D: drive.
    .
Add a second validation for non-DPREP'd HDDs with the above
fix so the system can stop just after the devices are mounted.
Now, if the hard drives are reversed, a "No Boot Source Found"
message is displayed then the system reboots.
