IJ54641: SIGILL FROM JIT COMPILED METHOD

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Error Message: The JVM terminates unexpectedly. The crash data
  indicates that the crash was caused by a SIGILL on a vmovdqu32
  instruction from a JIT compiled method.

Local fix

• The use of the JVM command line option
  -Xjit:disableAutoSIMD
  will reduce the chance of the problem occurring. A more complete
  workaround is to set the shell environment variable
  export TR_DisableAVX512=1
  however this is only effective with IBM SDK 8.0.8.40 onwards.
  

Problem summary

• The JIT makes use of AVX512 instructions to produce optimized
  code for those processors that support it. However, it is
  possible for the operating system to not support the use of
  AVX512 even though the processor has that capability, and in
  this case the resulting code fails with SIGILL.
  

Problem conclusion

• The JVM has been updated to check that the operating system as
  well as the hardware supports AVX512 before generating those
  instructions.
