Error description

  • IBM.ConfigRM is an RSCT subsystem primarily responsible
for handling "Peer Domain" configurations, supporting
products like PowerHA SystemMirror and "SAMP" (System
Automation for Multi-Platform). It is also needed for
    AIX Live Kernel Update (LKU).

It is installed as part of rsct.core.rmc, but has always
needed the support of the rsct.basic.rte package to
perform any of its real work. (rsct.basic filesets are
automatically installed if supporting LKU or either of
    the above-mentioned products.)

    Starting in AIX 7.2 TL04 SP2 (RSCT 3.2.5.1), a new
startup dependency was added to ConfigRM as part of
support for a restart grace period for failing cthags
clients (including ConfigRM), primarily intended for
    use in PowerHA cluster solutions.
(Note: Most of this new functionality was introduced
in the GA of TL04, with RSCT 3.2.5.0. But the new
dependency did not become effective until 3.2.5.1
because of some build issues in the 3.2.5.0 delivery.)

Prior to this, on AIX installations not actively using
IBM.ConfigRM, the subsystem would simply run without
doing anything, waiting for its services to be needed.
With this new dependency, unfortunately, it will fail
to start if the rsct.basic.rte subsystem is not
installed, creating several SRC errors in the errpt
as srcmstr tries to restart it up to its restart limit.

The errors are only visible to customers who are using
the most minimal of AIX install images, which cannot
support LKU, and does not include the rsct.basic
    package sets by default.

Local fix

  • Customers without rsct.basic filesets are not dependent
on any of IBM.ConfigRM's functionality anyway, and can
either install the rsct.basic packages from their AIX
installation media, or ignore the SRC errors related to
    IBM.ConfigRM.

A temporary ifix will also be provided for the affected
7.2 TLs, for customers with high security concerns, who
cannot install new packages on short notice, and also
    find the additional errors unacceptable.

Problem summary

  • IBM.ConfigRM in RSCT 3.2.5 can no longer even start if the
    rsct.basic filesets are not installed.
Future AIX installations will always include rsct.basic.

Problem conclusion
