IJ30516: VRSAS ERROR ON SAS WHEN RUNNING EXTENDVG ON VIOS

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Rebooting a system with SAS drives after running extendvg
  for rootvg
  on VIOS under protected shell, record "VRSAS" error in
  errlog. It occurs when running extendvg for an hdisk
  connected via "PCIe 3 RAID SAS Adapter
  Quad-port 6Gb x8" adapter.

Local fix

• Reset the reserve_policy to no_reserve and reboot.
  $ chdev -dev hdisk1 -perm -attr reserve_policy=no_reserve
  $ shutdown -restart
  

Problem summary

• VIOS attempts to protect VGs created for the purpose of
  creating backing LVs by setting reserve_policy=single_path on
  those disks
  .
  However, for SAS disks this can result in errors generated for
  those disks due to reservation conflicts.
  .
  Note we do not see actual I/O errors as a result of this, just
  errpt entries indicating one of the paths had issues.
  

Problem conclusion

• Add an exception in iocli extendvg and mkvg code to not set
  reserve_policy=single_path for SAS disks.
