Error description

  • 1. Make sure MTA and MSP processes are
    not running:

    # ps -ef | grep -i mail

    2.Create/update /etc/mail/aliases file
    to add an alias. Example:

    rdt: rtenjarl@us.ibm.com

    3.Create/recompile aliases.db file:
    # newaliases
    or
    # /usr/sbin/sendmail -bi

    4. Set up a relay server.

    5. Edit /etc/mail/submit.cf to send mail
through relay server and save the changes.

D{MTAHost}[relay server IP address or hostname]

DS<relay server IP address or hostname>

    6. Run mail command. Example:

    date | mail -v -s "testing alias" <alias ex:rdt>

    Output doesn't show recipient alias
    getting resolved as below:

    rdt... aliased to rtenjarl@us.ibm.com
    .....

and mail doesn't get delivered to
    recipient ex:rtenjarl@us.ibm.com

Local fix

  • 1. Rename submit.cf.

    2. Add the relay server to the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
DS<relay server IP address or hostname>

    3. Run mail command:
    example:
    date | mail -v -s "testing alias" <alias ex:rdt>

    3. Alias should be resolved and mail delivered to the
    recipient.
