IJ03606: JAVA CRASHES WITH -VERSION

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Error Message: A SIGSEGV is received early in the JVM
  startup, possibly even when a user attempts
  to run "java -version". This APAR only occurs on the x86/amd64
  platform. Analysis with a debugger will show that the cause of
  the crash was a SIGILL on an AVX instruction.

Local fix

• This issue can be worked around using the environment variable
  TR_DisableAVX=1
  

Problem summary

• The problem is caused when user's CPU declares supports for AVX
  but the operating system and/or virtual machine does not enable
  AVX support.
  

Problem conclusion

• AVX availability detection logic in JIT has been updated to
  check OSXSAVE status in addition to AVX flag from CPU feature
  flags.
