Abstract
INSTALLING 7.1 IBM I ACCESS FOR WINDOWS TO AN IBM I 5.4 SERVER
Error Description
** Last updated April 27, 2011 **
Throughout this document "Access for Windows" will be used
when referring to a nonspecific release/version of the product.
If you are currently using an IBM i 5.4 server as a central
location from which you install and/or update your Windows
PC(s) that are running "Access for Windows", you will need to
consider the options below when moving to 7.1 "IBM i Access for
Windows".
The 7.1 server media for "IBM i Access for Windows" (Product ID
5770-XE1) will not restore on a 5.4 server. You will also not
be able to apply 5770-XE1 PTFs to your 5.4 server as a means of
applying service packs for "Access for Windows".
You may keep your server at 5.4 and upgrade your PC(s) with
7.1 "IBM i Access for Windows" using one of the following three
options:
(1) Install/Upgrade your PC(s) to 7.1 "IBM i Access for Windows"
directly from the PC DVD media.
Note:
The server media is a different DVD than the PC media.
The server media will contain the Product Id of 5770-XE1.
To apply updates to your PC(s), you will need to download the
service packs which are available at:
http://www.ibm.com/systems/i/software/access/windows/casp.html
(2) Use a 6.1 or 7.1 server as your central location from
which you install and/or update your Windows PC(s).
Load the 7.1 server media on to a 6.1 or 7.1 server. This
option will allow you to apply service packs to the server
via 5770-XE1 PTFs. Once the service pack is applied, then you
may update the PC(s) from that server. Using this option may
require you to update the Source Directory on your PC so "Access
for Windows" knows where to check for and get updates.
To change the "Access for Windows" Source Directory:
Start ->IBM iSeries Access for Windows
->iSeries Access for Windows Properties
Select Service tab.
Change Source Directory to include new system location.
(3) Create a 7.1 installation source on your 5.4 server.
This option will step you through how to manually load the PC
media to your 5.4 server. If you use SAVLICPGM and RSTLICPGM
to save/restore your LPP(s), you will need to use an alternative
method to save/restore this 7.1 installation source.
Note:
The server media is a different DVD than the PC media.
The server media will contain the Product Id of 5770-XE1.
The contents of the server media and the PC media are basically
the same. They are just in different formats. The instructions
below will step you through how to load the PC media on to your
5.4 server. When you have finished, you will have created a
7.1 PC installation source on a 5.4 server. Using this option
may require you to update the Source Directory on your PC so
"Access for Windows" knows where to check for and get updates.
(a) Determine where you want the installation source to be and
create a directory in an appropriate path with a name of
your choice. For example:
MKDIR DIR('\QIBM\Windows')
MKDIR DIR('\QIBM\Windows\v7r1_IBMiAccess')
The above directory will be used in the following steps.
(b) You will now use the PC DVD media to create the 7.1
installation directory. The steps below assume you have
mapped a network drive from your PC to the 5.4 server.
D: will be the drive letter for the PC's DVD drive
E: will be the mapped network drive to the server
(c) Insert the PC DVD media into the PC's DVD drive.
(d) Bring up a command prompt on your PC.
Start -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
(e) During the xcopy, you may see the following prompt:
"Does imageXX specify a file name
or directory name on the target
(F = file, D = directory)?"
You should answer D so the directory name is also copied.
From the command prompt, copy the processor type(s) you
need for your PC(s):
xcopy D:\Windows\image32
E:\QIBM\Windows\v7r1_IBMiAccess\image32 /E /H /Y
xcopy D:\Windows\image64a
E:\QIBM\Windows\v7r1_IBMiAccess\image64a /E /H /Y
From the command prompt, copy as many language features as you
need (at least one is required):
xcopy D:\WIndows\MRI2924 E:\QIBM\Windows\v7r1_IBMiAccess\MRI2924
xcopy D:\WIndows\MRI2931 E:\QIBM\Windows\v7r1_IBMiAccess\MRI2931
...
(f) The installation source you just created needs to be updated
with the latest 7.1 service pack. The latest service pack
information for 7.1 may be found at:
http://www.ibm.com/systems/i/software/access/windows/casp.html
Each Service Pack has a Downloads.txt file that contains
information for how to install the Service Pack. Download the
latest 7.1 service pack and see section:
3.1 Update Installation Image
for how to install the service pack to the installation source
you just created.
(g) The installation source is now ready to be used. As new
service packs become available, you should update this
installation source following the instructions in the previous
step.
(h) In order for your PC(s) to get updates automatically from
this new installation location, you may need to modify the
Source Directory on the PC:
Start ->IBM iSeries Access for Windows
->iSeries Access for Windows Properties
Select Service tab.
Change Source Directory to include new installation location.
(e.g. Change Source Directory from
E:\QIBM\ProdData\Access\Windows\Install\Image
to
E:\QIBM\Windows\v7r1_IBMiAccess\image32
or image64a
...depending on whether your PC is a 32 or 64 bit
architecture.
Hit the Apply button.
Hit the OK button.
You may now update your PC to 7.1 "IBM i Access for Windows"
from the 5.4 server.
Save/Restore a 7.1 Installation Source on a 5.4 Server
------------------------------------------------------
If you used option (3) above to create a 7.1 installation
source on your 5.4 server, SAVLICPGM and RSTLICPGM cannot be
used to save/restore the installation source. The following
is one example of how you may save and restore the 7.1
installation source:
CRTSAVF FILE(YOURLIB/YOURFILE)
SAV DEV('/QSYS.LIB/YOURLIB.LIB/YOURFILE.FILE')
OBJ(('/QIBM/Windows/v7r1_IBMiAccess/' *INCLUDE))
RST DEV('/QSYS.LIB/YOURLIB.LIB/YOURFILE.FILE')
OBJ(('/QIBM/Windows/v7r1_IBMiAccess/'))
