Abstract
7.1 IBM I ACCESS FOR WINDOWS
Error Description
** Last Updated March 10, 2011 **
The following information documents issues that may occur when
installing or upgrading to "7.1 IBM i Access for Windows".
Issue 1:
The message "A system restart is pending, you must restart the
computer before installing IBM i Access For Windows 7.1," occurs
repeatedly. Even after restarting the computer several times
and attempting the install again, the message continues to occur
and prevents the installation.
Cause:
Some applications running on the PC have utilized a feature in
Windows to schedule file rename operations for the next
operating system re-start. This action causes a Windows
Installer property to be set indicating a reboot is pending.
When performing an installation, the reboot pending property
triggers the above message. After restarting the operating
system, the application runs again and repeats the file rename
scheduling. When an attempt is made to run the installation
again, the message appears again. If the application scheduling
the file rename starts automatically after a system restart, the
installation will continue to display the above message and will
not be able to continue.
Background:
IBM i Access for Windows 7.1 Installation is built on the
multi-package transaction capabilities of Windows Installer 4.5.
Multi-package transactions will not function properly when the
file rename operation is pending. To prevent installation
failure and corruption of client computers, the installation is
not allowed to proceed under the conditions described above.
Circumvention 1:
Install 7.1 IBM i Access for Windows using Diagnostic Startup.
1. Start -> Run -> MSCONFIG
a. General Tab -> Select Diagnostic Startup
b. Services Tab -> Select Enable all and click OK.
c. A new window is displayed. Select Restart.
2. After the PC restarts in Diagnostic mode, navigate to the
installation source and execute SETUP.EXE or CWBLAUNCH.EXE.
If a version of Windows Installer 4.5 (or later) is not already
on the PC, it will be loaded automatically if you are installing
from the IBM i Access for Windows Version 7 Relase 1 DVD. After
Windows Installer 4.5 is installed, there will be a prompt to
restart the PC. After restarting the PC, installation of IBM i
Access for Windows will continue.
If a version of Windows Installer 4.5 (or later) was previously
installed on the PC, the install will continue without
interruption.
3. The PC may now be placed back into Normal Startup mode.
a.Start->Run->MSCONFIG
b. General Tab->Select Normal Startup and click OK.
c. A new Window is displayed. Select Restart.
Circumvention 2:
1. Temporarily rename the Windows registry entry that causes the
message to occur and prevents the install from proceeding.
2. Perform the upgrade or installation of "7.1 IBM i Access for
Windows".
3. Rename the Windows registry entry back.
To help automate these steps, see the readme.txt file at:

systems when installing from a mapped drive.

Issue 3:
There is a known problem where the System i Navigator connection
information under "My Connections" is lost during the upgrade.
There is no way to recover the connection information once it is
lost.
Circumvention:
This problem only affects clients at 6.1 service packs prior to
SI34289. Before upgrading to 7.1, install 6.1 service pack
SI34289 or later. Upgrades from 5.4 to 7.1 are not affected.
