Error description
The O/C/EOV trace provides a trace of the major control blocks used by OPEN, CLOSE, and End of Volume as they are passed from module to module. Below is an explanation of how to set the trace and an attempt to explain how to interpret some of the more important fields in the trace. To set the trace, specify or add the DCB parm DIAGNS=TRACE on the DD statement for which the trace is desired and run the job. For HSM, which does dynamic allocations for its data sets, the trace is activated via the following HSM 'PATCH' commands. PATCH .MCVT.+F2 X'00' /* TRACE O/C/EOV FOR TAPE */ PATCH .MCVT.+F3 X'00' /* TRACE O/C/EOV FOR DASD */ See the DFHSM Diagnosis Guide for additional information. The O/C/EOV routines will create a GTF USR=FFF record each time a major O/C/EOV routine is exited. Therefore GTF must be active and collecting USR=FFF records if you are running the O/C/EOV trace. When you have the trace data, the easiest way to view it is via IPCS, command panel (option 4), command "GTF USR(FFF)" Note that USR(FFF) must be specified since the IPCS default is to not format USR records. Hint for ease of usage: If you encounter a lot of "IPCS DETECTED A VIRTUAL STORAGE SHORTAGE" messages while viewing a large trace, specify "GTF USR(FFF) PRINT NOTERM", then issue a "CLOSE PRINT" command, then use ISPF "BROWSE' to browse the trace data set directly. There are two slightly different formats for the trace output depending on whether the PTF for OY47958 is applied or not. An example of both formats is included below. Some of the more important fields in the trace are: DCB: A copy of the DCB OPEN is currently processing. Note that Device Interface begins at offset 0 in the DCB and that Access Method Interface begins at offset 31. WKAREA1: The first part of the O/C/OEV workarea. This area often contains either a DSCB (indicated by a X'F1' at offset 0, or tape labels (indicated by VOL1, HDR1, or HDR2 at offset 0). It can also contain messages or can be used as just a workarea. WKAREA2: This is a copy of the JFCB (or a copy of the user's copy of the JFCB in the case of OPEN TYPE=J). The JFCB is just an incore representation of the DD statement so in addition to the DSNAME, there may be BLKSIZE, LRECL, VOLUME information, etc. in the JFCB. See the MVS DIAGNOSIS: DATA AREAS manual for a complete description of the fields contained in the JFCB. WKAREA3: This is the ECB/IOB used by O/C/EOV to perform such functions as reading tape labels etc.. If you are experiencing I/O errors during O/C/EOV processing, this MAY be a good place to look. WKAREA4: CCWs used in conjunction with ECB/IOB above. WKAREA5: Internal flags used by O/C/EOV, generally of no interest, and pointers to various control blocks: ASCB, TCB, JSCB, DSAB QDB, DSAB, DEB extension, TIOT, UCB, User's DCB, Copied DCB (the one O/C/EOV actually manipulates), parmlist, etc. WTG TABLE: WTGMODNM and WTGMODID together are an EBCDIC representation of the module we are exiting. WTGMODNM and WTGENTRY together are an EBCDIC representation of the module we are going to. Note: with OY47958 this is also formatted in English. O/C/EOV Trace without OY47958: Note that the trace is truncated on the right, but the fields should still be fairly self-explanatory.
